Match Preview
The Netherlands – losing finalists at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup – begin their campaign this time around against fellow UEFA nation Portugal. It will be their third Women’s World Cup tournament, and this time they won’t be facing New Zealand in the opening match – as they did in 2015 and 2019.
Due to the ACL injury she suffered with Arsenal in December, Andries Jonker’s side will be without star player and all-time record scorer Vivianne Miedema.
As part of the Women’s World Cup this year, Portugal will be playing alongside Haiti, the Republic of Ireland, Morocco, Panama, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zambia. They qualified for the tournament thanks to a 2-1 win over Cameroon in the Inter-Confederation play-offs. Carole Costa won the match with a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
In both of their previous women’s international tournaments, they lost in the group stage in the European Championships in 2017 and 2022.
Netherlands vs Portugal Head-to-Head
Portuguese and Dutch teams have met eight times previously, with the Dutch winning seven of them.
The last five meetings in women’s football between the Netherlands and Portugal have ended in a Dutch success, with the most recent coming in last summer’s European Championship finals. The 3-2 win for the Oranje was registered during the second round of group stage matches at the tournament, with Damaris Egurrola and Stefanie van der Gragt opening a two-goal lead before Carole Costa (penalty) and Diana Silva put Portugal back on track. Daniëlle van de Donk sealed the victory just after the hour mark.
