Germany hits Morocco for six with Popp at the double

Group H: Germany 6-0 Morocco

It was Germany’s biggest victory so far in the Australia & New Zealand 2023 tournament as Alexandra Popp struck twice.

At the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the two-time champions had only lost one of their previous 24 group-stage matches, and debutantes Morocco had no chance of adding to that.

At the 11th minute, Germany’s high press forced the Atlas Lionesses to surrender possession of their own defensive third, giving them a 1-0 lead. While there was plenty of work to be done, Kathrin Hendrich and Popp did it with aplomb, with a tantalising cross from the former bulleted home by a perfectly timed header from the latter.

In the second half, Popp emphasized her aerial prowess with another excellent goal, underlining her aerial prowess more than any other player at this tournament. Despite impeccable service, the veteran striker still needed to demonstrate strength and agility to glance in Klara Buhl’s inswinging corner.

After another of her superb crosses caused havoc in the Atlas Lionesses’ defense, Buhl followed up with an emphatic finish in the opening minute of the second half.

After two scruffy Moroccan own goals – by Hanane Ait Al Haj and Yasmin Mrabet – and a late Lea Schuller goal, Germany tightened their grip on Morocco.

Before Tuesday’s meeting between Colombia and Korea Republic, the European giants hold a commanding lead at the top of Group H.
